Less than a year after opening a brand-new security screening checkpoint at Airside E, Tampa International Airport is now getting ready to replace the entire roof on the 23-year-old building.
Over the next couple of months, travelers will notice construction scaffolding going up on the north end of the Airside between Gates 62 and 68. Workers will be removing and replacing sections of the metal roof and gutters in phases, with the project scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
Airside E's roof is original to the building and has reached the end of its life span. Passengers will see the scaffolding on the building during this period, but should not experience any significant interruptions to flight operations as roofers perform the work.
The roof of the new 19,542-square-foot security screening checkpoint, which opened in March, is new and does not need replacement. Airside E opened in 2002 and needed the new checkpoint because the building was designed and constructed prior to the establishment of the Transportation Security Administration.
The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board selected the Beck Group as design-builder on the project in October 2024. The reroofing will cost about $22.7 million, and is included in the Aviation Authority's Capital Budget.
