UWF names new general counsel

The University of West Florida has appointed David Fugett as general counsel for the University, effective April 15, 2026. Fugett most recently served as the executive vice president for Human Resources and Legal Affairs at Polk State College.

"I am excited to welcome David Fugett to the University of West Florida," said President Manny Diaz Jr. "His experience in Florida higher education will serve the University exceptionally well and will be an excellent resource to our team."

As general counsel, Fugett will provide legal guidance and counsel in executive and policy decision-making and serve as a member of the president's senior leadership group; lead the Office of General Counsel and its team, as well as outside counsel retained to represent the University; oversee and manage the provision of all legal services to the University and Board of Trustees; provide counsel and guidance on all legal matters relevant to the University; and perform other duties as requested by the president and Board of Trustees.

"This is an exciting time at the University of West Florida," Fugett said. "I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve President Diaz and the Board of Trustees and assist in implementing the vision they have for the future of the University. My three children graduated from public high school in Escambia County, and my wife and I love Pensacola. It truly feels like we are coming home, and I can't wait to get started."

With positions in both supportive and administrative roles, Fugett has dedicated more than 30 years in legal practice and support. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Toccoa Fall College and J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law, Fugett was a partner in an insurance defense firm and owner in a sole proprietorship, engaging in litigation and trial practice. After representing and defending clients for more than 15 years, Fugett went on to serve at the Florida Department of State, New College of Florida, Florida Polytechnic University and Polk State College. Throughout his career, Fugett has also led various presentations, lectures and classes on subjects like democracy, artificial intelligence and ethics in leadership.
