At its regular Board meeting today, the Miami-Dade County School Board awarded contracts to two construction companies to complete General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects at James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary School and West Lake Preparatory Academy valued at $37.5 million.
James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary School - Veitia Padron, Inc. was approved for a renovation project at this school. Located in Hialeah, the school was built in 1959, and consists of 16 buildings with 848 student stations.
The scope of the project includes interior renovations of three buildings, restrooms, as well as the track and field area and resurfacing of the basketball courts. Other enhancements include new covered walkways, bus drop-off, playground, P.E. shelter and alarm system. Additionally, the exterior of all buildings will be repainted, exterior windows and doors will be replaced, along with the HVAC system and the sanitary sewer system.
Total project allocation - Approximately $15.2 million Final completion - August 2026
Total sub-consultant Small/Micro Business Enterprise (S/MBE) participation: 25.14 percent
Total sub-consultant Minority/Women Business Enterprises (M/WBE) participation: 5.7 percent
West Lakes Preparatory Academy - D Stephenson Construction, Inc. was approved to renovate the school, built in 1989, which consists of eight buildings with 695 student stations.
The scope of this project includes remodeling Building 5 into 12 middle school classrooms and labs with new finishes, flooring, ceilings and LED light fixtures. Building 6 will also be remodeled to include a new kitchen, dining and service area with service line, Building 2 will have new windows installed and a new HVAC rooftop units. The teacher's lounge will be renovated and expanded, and the locker rooms will be enhanced to include new ceilings, LED light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and finishes. The project will also include new restrooms.
Other improvements include new campus-wide public address system, stage lighting and sound system for the cafetorium and the elementary basketball courts will be resurfaced.

Total sub-consultant S/MBE participation: 13.76 percent
Total sub-consultant M/WBE participation: 14.57 percent
