Comfort Systems USA (FIX) stock rose 7.1% on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.4%. The company released no announcement, earnings report, or filing around the move, and 17 of the 20 other construction and engineering companies valued at $2 billion or more also rose that day. So what was going on in the market that Tuesday, and what does Comfort Systems' business look like now?
What Was Going On In The Market That Tuesday?
Stocks rose, though not by much: the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.8%, rising a little more than the S&P 500. News reports that morning said investors were watching the U.S. midterm elections, which could change control of Congress.
Away from the market, Comfort Systems is now mostly a builder for technology customers. Technology made up 59% of its revenue in the first nine months of 2026, up from 42% a year earlier, management said on the October 23 call. Backlog represents the work customers have signed for that is not yet done. Management also said demand kept this backlog climbing to a new high of $17.8 billion at the end of September. That backlog was 90% larger than a year earlier.
Comfort Systems Rose With Its GICS Sub-Industry
The median company in its GICS sub-industry rose 3.5%, about half of Comfort Systems' gain, and 5 of the 20 others rose 5% or more. The wider Industrials sector fund, XLI, gained 0.9%. All five companies on the Trefis peer list advanced, including Quanta Services at 5.8% and MYR at 4.8%. So Comfort Systems moved with its group that day, rising by more than any of its five peers.
Where Does Comfort Systems Stock Stand After The Jump?
A gain of this size is not rare for Comfort Systems. The stock logged seven similar jumps in the prior 365 days, most recently rising 7.2% on October 26. Over the past twelve months, the shares returned 33.4%, compared with 11.9% for the S&P 500.
The stock had already secured that gain by early May, however. Shares closed at $1,285.13 on November 3, well below their highest close of the past year of $2,066.51 on June 22, 2026. The stock lost 34.6% from May 5 to November 3, and fell 25.0% from October 5 to November 3. That stretch included a 9.3% drop on October 23, the day of the third-quarter call.
At 3.6 times sales, the stock is priced a little above the S&P 500's multiple of 3.2 times. Comfort Systems' next report covers the fourth quarter of 2026, when its backlog will be the figure to watch.
