Aurora University's music department reached another high note with the addition of two new ensembles this past academic year.
A mariachi band, Mariachi Las Luces, and the choir group AU Vocal Jazz offer two more opportunities for students to perform. Both ensembles made their concert debuts in October and have been active at campus events and concerts ever since.
"Growing our ensemble opportunities is part of an ongoing effort to further build a sense of community and belonging among our students through collaboration and participation," said Cristian Pastorello, chair and the Marvel E. Davis Distinguished Professor of Music, who noted the ensembles were enthusiastically received by the campus community.
Around 120 students are involved in AU ensembles, with nearly 20 members in Mariachi Las Luces and 10 singers in AU Vocal Jazz. Stephanie Aguilar Geron '27 is a member of four AU ensembles, including both the mariachi and vocal jazz lineups.
"Music has always been a huge part of who I am. The ensembles have given me balance, confidence, and a space where I can just enjoy music while still pushing myself to grow," she said. "Mariachi especially stood out to me because it helps me stay connected to my culture. I feel seen - we're constantly laughing and connecting, and it just feels like home."
The groups are the latest to join the department's expanding roster in recent years. The Aurora Singers, a soprano/alto choir, debuted in fall 2022, followed by AU Jazz Band in fall 2024.
