Exploring the future of journalism at the intersection of AI and media

From 7-11 May 2026, the Baltic Youth Innovation Lab on AI & Media, together with the Council of the Baltic Sea States as one of the collaborating partners, brought together 25 young journalism students, media experts, and international partners in Riga for five intensive days of learning, experimentation, and collaboration focused on the future of journalism in the age of artificial intelligence.

The international educational programme explored how AI is transforming journalism and media practices while creating a space for cross-cultural exchange, innovation, and critical discussion. Participants from Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Finland combined theoretical learning with hands-on experimentation, group work, and networking activities.

Throughout the week, students examined how artificial intelligence tools are already influencing newsroom workflows, content creation, verification processes, and storytelling. Workshops and discussions addressed both the opportunities and challenges of AI-driven journalism, with a strong focus on ethics, responsibility, and maintaining trust in media in an increasingly digital environment.

The programme also encouraged participants to reflect on the future role of journalists and media professionals in shaping sustainable and trustworthy information ecosystems. Through collaborative projects and practical exercises, students explored innovative approaches to storytelling while developing professional skills and international networks.

The lab featured lectures and mentoring sessions led by international experts from Denmark, Latvia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, who shared their expertise in journalism, AI applications, investigative reporting, and media innovation. Their guidance supported participants in navigating complex media challenges and experimenting with emerging technologies in journalism.

Among the expert partners and mentors was Kazimierz Musiał, CBSS Senior Adviser for Regional Identity, who contributed to the programme with expertise in democracy, culture, and education in the Baltic Sea Region.

The event was financially supported by the CBSS Project Support Facility (PSF) funding as part of the #JournalismForSecurity project.
