NIB to support City of Gothenburg investments in port expansion and sports facilities

NIB) has signed an uncommitted loan facility with the City of Gothenburg for a 20-year loan of SEK 1.0 billion (EUR 92.6 million) to finance the city's harbour expansion Skandia Gateway and the construction of three new sports facilities.

The port investment will reinforce and deepen quay walls and the fairway to enable the Port of Gothenburg to accommodate fully loaded ultra-large container vessels. The project is intended to reduce a capacity bottleneck at Sweden's main logistics hub and support more efficient and resilient transport and logistics.

The loan will also support the construction of three new sports facilities: Slottsskogshallen, Backavallens Sporthall and Masthugget Sporthall. These investments are not only to enhance public health and social cohesion, but also to support more efficient use of urban infrastructure and increased accessibility. The facilities will provide spaces for organised sports, school activities and community use, supporting a wide range of users including children and young people, people with disabilities and older residents.

André Küüsvek, NIB President and CEO said: "This financing supports investments with a broad public value. The port project will improve transport efficiency and strengthen supply-chain resilience, while the new sports facilities will support wellbeing and social inclusion in Gothenburg."

The City of Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden. The city has approximately 614,000 inhabitants and hosts a variety of important industries, as well as Scandinavia's largest harbour.
