Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is encouraging the community to explore the outdoors, get active and learn about local parks by participating in one of several missions available through Agents of Discovery, a free educational mobile gaming platform.

"This innovative app encourages residents, especially youth, to explore our parks in an interactive and innovative way," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "It combines movement with technology while also fostering knowledge of our city and strengthening connection to our community and parks."

Agents of Discovery increases access to educational and recreational opportunities in local parks through innovative technologies. The platform uses augmented reality to get people active outdoors, offering residents a free, fun and engaging activity to explore and learn about select Long Beach parks. Users can participate in interactive themed missions, compete in challenges and earn rewards. The platform is customizable and designed to accommodate different learning styles and paces, suitable for people of all ages and available in English and Spanish. The Agents of Discovery app is available for download in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The following missions are now available for community members to participate in:

  • Celebrate Black History Month with February's challenge in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (1910 Lemon Ave.), available through Feb. 28.
  • Explore and learn about the local wetlands environment at DeForest Park (6255 DeForest Ave.), now available through 2026.
  • Learn about the environment and local wildlife through fun challenges at Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.), now available through 2026.
  • Discover fun things about this regional park with the Welcome to El Dorado Regional Park and Nature Center mission at El Dorado East Regional Park and El Dorado Nature Center (7550 E. Spring St.), available now through October.
  • Learn about fire safety with Smokey the Bear's 81st Birthday mission at El Dorado Park West (2800 N. Studebaker Rd., near the Duck Pond), available now through August 2026.

Offering the Agents of Discovery app supports PRM's Parks Make Long Beach Strategic Plan objective to increase youth participation from all ages, genders and abilities in physical activities like sports and recreation by introducing youth to new opportunities that combine movement with technology.
