Southwestern University has received a $5 million gift from an anonymous donor to support the strategic renovation of the Fine Arts Building. This generous gift will help enhance the building’s infrastructure, revitalize underutilized spaces, and modernize facilities, preserving the Sarofim School of Fine Arts’ legacy while enabling a bold vision for the future of interdisciplinary fine arts education.

“We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary $5 million investment in the future of the Fine Arts Building and the students who bring it to life each day,” Vice President for University Relations Marie Muhvic said. “As one of the few undergraduate liberal arts institutions with a dedicated school of fine arts, we believe deeply in the power of creative expression as a foundational pillar of a Southwestern education. For generations, the Fine Arts Building has been a vibrant home for creativity, collaboration, and discovery—a place where students gather not only to study, but to explore new ways of thinking and making. This gift comes at a truly pivotal moment, allowing us to honor that legacy while thoughtfully designing a space that meets the evolving needs of today’s engaged, imaginative learners. It is both a celebration of what this building has meant to our community and a bold step toward what it will become.”

Founded in the spirit of creative excellence and community engagement, the Sarofim School of Fine Arts has long been a leader in nurturing artistic talent and innovation. However, the building that houses this dynamic academic unit is showing signs of its age.

Renovations to the Fine Arts Building will address structural and accessibility needs while reimagining the space as a dynamic, inclusive environment for creative inquiry and performance. Work to modernize studios, rehearsal spaces, and the sculpture garden will ensure that the Fine Arts Building matches the caliber of Southwestern’s academic programs and the aspirations of its students.

The full scope of the project includes a holistic yet targeted revitalization of the Fine Arts Building. The initial plan includes re-leveling the foundation and correcting structural and drainage issues. On the interior of the building, work is slated to replace flooring and ceiling tiles with durable, modern finishes, add new lighting and painted accent walls, and remodel the choral practice room to support both individual artistry and ensemble excellence. Plans also tentatively include enlarging doorways and installing an ADA-compliant ramp that will double as an art installation path.

Around the exterior of the Fine Arts Building, the proposed renovation project includes the pouring of new foundations to house large, rotating outdoor sculptures, the reconfiguration of irrigation systems to support native, sustainable landscaping, and the installation of lighting for nighttime art illumination and pedestrian engagement.

As Southwestern prepares to make improvements to the physical space, work is already underway to envision the next phase of the academic programming that will take place within the walls of the Fine Arts Building. University leaders are advancing a new academic strategic plan that will guide the evolution of curriculum, graduate pathways, certificates, and academic partnerships.

This plan will also shape how the Fine Arts Building is transformed. This approach ensures that any updates to the building are driven not only by infrastructure needs, but by a clear vision for interdisciplinary collaboration, creative practice, and student experience. The academic strategic plan is a key component of Southwestern’s new Tactical Plan, set to launch in Fall 2026.
