TSA to begin Operations at New East Security Checkpoint at DEN

Local Press Release
Monday, August 4, 2025

DENVER - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Denver International Airport (DEN) will begin screening departing travelers in the new East Security Checkpoint located on Level 6 on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The state-of-the-art checkpoint will feature 17 lanes and is a mirror image of the West Security Checkpoint, which opened up in 2024.

The East Security Checkpoint features three entrances. Electronic signage will direct travelers to the correct entrance based on the type of screening the traveler is eligible for while also providing travel advisements and information.

"This new checkpoint will improve the safety and security of the screening process and provide a more efficient experience for passengers," said TSA's Federal Security Director for Colorado Douglas Cruz. "With cutting-edge technology and streamlined operations, we're enhancing the traveler experience while maintaining the highest security standards."

Travelers will notice these security technologies in use when being screened through the new checkpoint.

Key Features

  • Advanced Technologies:
    • Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2): 34 units verify identities by comparing real-time photos with IDs. Photos are not stored, and travelers can opt out for alternative verification.
    • Automated Screening Lanes (ASLs): 17 lanes with larger bins, automated conveyors, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for efficient screening.
    • Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray Units: Generate 3D images for enhanced threat detection, allowing electronics and liquids to remain in bags.
    • eAIT Body Scanners: Nine open-design scanners use millimeter wave technology, reducing rescan needs and accommodating travelers with metal implants.
    • Bottle Liquid Scanners: Use lasers to screen medically necessary liquids over 3.4 ounces.
    • Explosive Trace Detection (ETD): Swabs can detect explosive residue on a traveler's hands or their belongings in the security checkpoint.

TSA at DEN screened 24.6 million people in 2024, making it the 11th busiest airport for TSA security checkpoint screening operations. Completion of the East Security Checkpoint is part of the $2.1 billion Great Hall Program that enhances security, increases capacity and elevates the passenger experience. The next milestone is the opening of eight new security lanes on the north end of Level 5 in late summer 2026.
