Southwestern University is teaming up with Durham University to provide students with the opportunity to pursue master’s degrees at one of the world’s leading academic institutions. The articulation agreement between the two universities allows for Southwestern graduates to attend Durham University in England at a discounted rate to study a variety of master’s programs.
In the “4+1” agreement, qualified Southwestern graduates of any four-year undergraduate degree program will have the opportunity to earn select master’s degrees from Durham in just one year. The participating programs at Durham include master’s of art in archaeology, classics, international cultural heritage management, international relations, medieval and early modern studies, and museum and artifact studies, as well as master’s of science in physical activity, health, and society, and public policy.
Students who are accepted into the program will also receive a Dean’s Scholarship in the form of a fee reduction of 20% off full international student tuition and fees.
“We are excited to partner with Durham University, one of the world’s leading institutions of higher education, to create new pathways for our students to pursue advanced study in fields ranging from archaeology and international relations to public policy and physical activity, health, and society,” Chief Academic Officer & Dean of the Faculty Scott McLean said. “This 4+1 agreement reflects our shared commitment to academic excellence and provides Southwestern students with an extraordinary opportunity to build on their liberal arts foundation through a globally respected master’s experience.”

Student-athletes interested in extending their athletic and academic careers will receive additional eligibility to compete collegiately. Named “Britain’s Number 1 Team Sport University,” Durham supports over 50 collegiate athletic programs, from traditional team sports like American football, baseball, and soccer, to offerings not commonly found in the United States, including archery, cricket, fencing, and polo. Over 75% of Durham students participate in at least one sports program, the largest participation rate in Britain.
Student-athletes who are accepted into the program will also receive an additional 20% off full international student tuition and fees, increasing the total discount to 40%.
Durham was recently ranked in the top 100 of QS 2026 World University Rankings. With more than 20,000 students, the University offers over 330 undergraduate and postgraduate courses across 17 distinctive colleges. Durham and Southwestern share similarly-storied histories, with the two institutions being founded within a decade of each other. Durham is England’s third-oldest university, formally founded in 1832. Southwestern lays claim as the first university in Texas with origins dating back to 1840.
Students interested in participating in the program should reach out Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Julie Cowley via email at [email protected]. Those interested must meet all relevant entry criteria and language requirements for their preferred program. Students who qualify to participate will apply directly to Durham for post-graduate enrollment.
