Washington D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres released the following statement on the federal government shutdown caused by President Trump and Congressional Republicans' refusal to protect healthcare for hard working families:
"Today marks the first day of the government shutdown. President Trump and Congressional Republicans canceled the workweek ahead of a looming crisis to protect tax cuts for billionaires, while families in the Inland Empire struggle to afford doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital care. Nearly 40,000 people in California's 35th Congressional District could lose coverage through Covered California, forcing impossible choices between rent, food, or healthcare.
Republicans control the White House, the Senate, and the House. They had the power to negotiate a solution but walked away. This shutdown is on them. I call on my Republican colleagues to return to Washington, negotiate in good faith, and stop punishing working families for their reckless priorities."
