Sen. Jaha Howard Introduces Legislation to Protect Immigrants’ Privacy Rights

ATLANTA (February 11, 2026) - Last week, Sen. Jaha Howard (D-Smyrna) introduced Senate Bill 464, which would prohibit federal immigration enforcement agencies from using individuals' biometric data, such as facial recognition software, voice prints, or retinal imaging, to verify immigration status.

Sen. Howard spoke to the new measure: "We must slow down ICE. President Trump's harmful immigration policy produces the bitter fruit of fear, indignity and intimidation. I introduced this bill to protect the immigrant communities I represent in Cobb and Fulton counties, and for immigrants all throughout our state. SB 464 stands with other bills that my fellow Senate Democrats introduced to defend the rights of immigrants in our state and hold immigration enforcement accountable to the same rule of law.

Like many of my colleagues, my faith teaches me to treat the foreigner in our homeland with hospitality, love and respect. We must consistently engage the idea of loving our neighbors as ourselves. Let's promote order and law with mutual respect that promotes human flourishing. Our focus should also be on streamlining the process rather than targeting those trying to navigate it. SB 464 would be a step forward in recognizing that fact and holding everyone to the same standard of the law."

SB 464 has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Public Safety, where it awaits further deliberation.
