FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Statement from Councilor Loretta Smith Regarding the January 19 Incident in Sullivan's Gulch

Councilor Loretta Smith is deeply concerned by the violent incident that occurred on the evening of January 19 in the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood, during which two Portland Police Bureau officers were shot while responding to a call. Councilor Smith is relieved to learn that both officers are in stable condition and extends her heartfelt thoughts and prayers to them and their families as they recover.

Councilor Smith states unequivocally that she does not condone any acts of violence - whether committed by law enforcement or directed toward them. Violence threatens the safety and well-being of the entire community, and she remains committed to fostering peace, accountability, and constructive engagement.

According to information released by the Portland Police Bureau, the suspect fled the scene and was not located during the initial search. The investigation remains active, and detectives continue to follow leads. Community members with information are encouraged to contact PPB's Homicide Unit and reference case number 26-18537.

Councilor Smith expresses gratitude to the residents affected by the emergency response and to the first responders, tactical teams, and support units who worked through the night to protect the public.

She will continue to monitor developments and stands with the community in calling for safety, healing, and nonviolence
