NETL Releases Critical Minerals and Materials Matchmaker Survey Results

NETL has released insights from the Critical Minerals and Materials Matchmaker (CM3) survey , an online information resource created to help connect activities across the critical minerals and materials (CMM) supply chain.

CMMs are key ingredients for a wide array of advanced and emerging technologies. Some examples are:

  • Batteries use lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite that are crucial for energy storage.
  • Semiconductors use gallium and germanium.
  • Cell phones use tantalum.
  • Advanced military equipment, including guidance systems, lasers and radar use CMMs.

Olivia Marcelli, CM3 task lead at NETL, said "DOE is strategically investing in critical minerals and materials, and efforts like the CM3 survey will help highlight where those investments can have the most impact and benefit."

DOE is building reliable, affordable, sustainable and secure domestic CMM supply chains for innovations in U.S. energy, manufacturing and transportation while promoting safe, sustainable, economic and environmentally sustainable solutions to meet current and future needs.

The survey identified insightful trends into where CMM stakeholders and their organizations are located across the U.S. and CMM initiatives and research priorities both planned and underway.

The survey was designed to allow CMM organizations to (1) self-identify their CMM-aligned activities and interests, and (2) receive high-level insights from survey responses to improve awareness and understanding of ongoing activities.

More than 125 stakeholders from industry and academia have taken the CM3 survey. Survey results are available on the Energy Data eXchange (EDX®) ClaiMM website.

The research team has also developed a matchmaker algorithm that reviews survey responses to identify and pair survey users so they may collaborate or gain insights into new research opportunities.

"The survey results help us better understand this community, but we also want the results to give stakeholders new insights and help them find new growth opportunities," Marcelli said.
