What Would Stalled US Sales Do To McDonald’s Stock

The worry for McDonald's (MCD) shareholders is that US sales will remain stuck. In fiscal Q3 2026, McDonald's reported higher profit and revenue as its international business offset sluggish US sales. During the November 4 call, management said US comparable sales declined 0.2%. The company will use an ongoing test to choose the final lineup for a national launch of new value menus planned for early 2027. So would McDonald's lose much of its growth if US sales stalled?

Most Of McDonald's Fiscal 2025 Growth Came From Abroad

Fiscal 2025 figures suggest McDonald's would keep most of its growth. US revenue rose 1.8% to $10.8 billion that year, while the International Operated Markets segment, which includes Germany, Australia and France, grew 8.0% to $13.6 billion. If the US business had stopped growing, it would have cost McDonald's about $0.2 billion of its $26.9 billion in total revenue. That represents about a fifth of the roughly $1.0 billion in revenue the company added that year. Its third segment, International Developmental Licensed Markets & Corporate, shrank 8.8% to $2.43 billion, which offset part of the gains.

A flat US year would slow McDonald's growth without shrinking its overall revenue, provided international sales keep rising. Investors are also paying no premium for the stock. McDonald's traded at 21.7 times trailing earnings at the November 6 close, compared with 21.8 for the S&P 500.

How Much Spare Cash Does McDonald's Have?

McDonald's generated $7.49 billion of free cash flow over the twelve months to September 30, 2026. That was more than the $5.28 billion it paid in dividends. Over those same twelve months, the company's operating income covered its interest expense 7.9 times.

McDonald's does carry more debt than the S&P 500 as a whole. Its total debt equals 27.9% of its market value, against 19.4% for the index. Given the cash flow and interest coverage, however, a flat US year looks like a matter of slower growth rather than a strain on the dividend or the debt.

Cash and debt cover do not protect the share price, though, which can still decline when markets turn. Across four recent market shocks, McDonald's stock fell as much as 17% during the 2022 inflation shock, when the S&P 500 fell 24%.

What Will Show Whether McDonald's US Fix Is Working?

The first answers will come from an eight-week test of two new value menus. This trial launched in about 1,900 restaurants the week before the November 4 call. Franchisees operating about 4,000 additional locations decided to introduce similar bundles before seeing the results. Management said these two groups combined account for more than 40% of the US system.

Evidence points in both directions. US comparable sales turned positive in September, and management said unit sales of McDonald's top Extra Value Meals are up about 7% from a year earlier. Yet management also said that its marketing has not met the standard it would set for McDonald's. Executives also called it premature to share test results after one week.

US comparable sales are the number to watch when McDonald's reports its fiscal Q4 2026 results, expected in February 2027.

Beyond MCD: A Systematic Way To Invest

Before you decide on MCD, consider a better choice. Since its September 2020 launch, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P MidCap and Russell 2000, without betting on one stock.
