Mayor Mike Duggan today announced that he has authorized $1.75M in funding for emergency contracts to provide food to local pantries in the event Congress does not act to continue SNAP program funding and benefits. The funding will be distributed as follows:
Boxed/canned food
Fresh Produce
Early next week, the Mayor also will announce an emergency food distribution network of more than 100 sites in the City of Detroit where residents will be able access this food.
The Mayor's office is leading efforts across city departments and partner agencies, including working with the philanthropic community to identify sustained funding sources if the SNAP stoppage become an extended one.
"We are hopeful that Congress will act to restore SNAP funding so our government is not using food access for families in need as a weapon in political disagreements. But if they do not, the City of Detroit will continue to work to make sure food pantries are stocked and our most vulnerable residents have access to the food they need."
In the extent addition funding is needed beyond the $1.75M the Mayor was legally able to authorize on an emergency basis, Council President Pro Tem James Tate, who chairs the Budget & Finance committee will lead the Council effort to authorize additional funding.
The Mayor also posted this video message to Detroiters from a working group meeting today at City Hall, which was attended by the heads city departments and community food security partner agencies, to share the city's collective SNAP stoppage response plan.
