KPD Chief Paul Noel and KFD Chief Stan Sharp will lead Knoxville leaders in observing the 24th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks with a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial on the lawn of the City County Building, 400 Main St. The ceremony begins at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.
At 8:46 a.m., a moment of silence will be observed, followed by the ringing of the First Baptist Church bells to mark the time hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Community leaders will then present a wreath and flowers at the base of the 9/11 monument, a black granite obelisk created by Randy Vaden and installed in 2003.
The ceremony will be led by KPD Chaplain Pam Neal, with KFD Chaplain Paul Trumpore offering the benediction. Kelly Anne Shipe will sing "God Bless America" and "Amazing Grace," followed by Philip Troutman who will play "Taps."
For public safety, Main Street will be closed to traffic between Walnut and Gay streets beginning at 8 a.m., with all traffic reopening no later than 9:15 a.m.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's Memorial Stair Climb will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Covenant Health Park.
