Luján Releases Snapshot of Republican Reconciliation Bill Ahead of Budget Fight $72 Billion for Trump’s Wants, $0 For Americans’ Needs

"I don't think about Americans' financial situation."

- Donald Trump (May 12, 2026)

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement and breakdown of the Senate Republicans' proposed budget.

"In every corner of New Mexico and across the country, families are facing sky-high costs. Instead of spending billions to fund an out-of-control ICE and CBP and President Trump's ballroom, my Republican colleagues should focus on lowering gas, grocery, and health care costs for American families. This partisan bill is a betrayal of families across America who are paying the price for this administration's failed policies," said Senator Luján.

Republicans gutted vital programs to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, and as soaring costs crush families, Senate Republicans are trying to jam through more than $70 billion in taxpayer money for rogue ICE operations and another $1 billion into Trump's ballroom-all while they do nothing to lower costs for families.

Republicans' bill includes more than $70 billion for ICE and CBP, with NO real reforms, NO guardrails, and NO accountability for the violence and abuses we've seen from Trump's rogue enforcement. ICE and CBP are already sitting on more than $100 billion that Republicans funneled to them through the Republican Budget Betrayal passed into law last year.

Key Stats:

  • Inflation surged to 3.8%-its highest level since the pandemic-and is outpacing wage growth
  • Gas is nearly $5.00 a gallon-and prices just keep climbing
  • Grocery prices had the biggest one-month jump in nearly four years-fresh vegetables are 44% more expensive than they were just 3 months ago
  • More than 1 in 5 Americans who got health insurance this year from the Healthcare.gov marketplace were dropped after the first month for being unable to pay their premiums
  • Electricity bills are up by as much as 13% under Trump's watch-and are expected to stay high
  • Already-high mortgage rates are increasing even more as inflation jumps
