Severe Weather Season: Reminders & Important Information

March 6, 2026

With severe weather season upon us, the City of Norman would like to remind residents to take proactive steps to protect their families, homes and businesses.

Oklahoma's severe weather threats can include thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, and tornadoes. City officials encourage community members to review emergency plans, assemble disaster supply kits, and stay informed when storms are in the forecast.

Sign Up for City Alerts

Residents are strongly encouraged to opt in to receive City emergency alerts via AlertNorman. These notifications provide timely information about severe weather, emergency response updates, road closures, and other urgent public safety information.

To sign up for City alerts and customize how you receive notifications (text, email, phone), visit normanok.gov/alertnorman.

Stay Weather-Aware

The City also recommends monitoring forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service. Residents can access up-to-date weather information, watches, warnings, and preparedness resources at weather.gov.

A NOAA Weather Radio, local news outlets, and trusted weather apps are also reliable tools during severe weather events.

Severe Weather Preparedness Tips

Residents should review and consider the below preparedness measures.

  • Know the difference:
    • A Watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather.
    • A Warning means severe weather is occurring or imminent.
  • Identify your safe place: If you do not have a storm shelter, use an interior room on the lowest level of your home, away from windows.
  • Build an emergency kit: Include water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, important documents, and pet supplies.
  • Secure outdoor items: Bring in patio furniture, trash bins, and other loose objects before storms arrive.
  • Have multiple ways to receive warnings: Do not rely on outdoor warning sirens alone.

Business owners can refer to the Ready Business Tornado Toolkit for more information on preparing a business for severe weather.
