The Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles, visits Ukrainian fighters at the Infantry Academy in Toledo
The Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles, held a meeting with the 131 Spanish and Ukrainian military personnel being trained at the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC).
At this meeting, Margarita Robles was interested in the development of the courses, which have been expanded in their latest edition to adapt to the needs of the Ukrainians.
The minister was clear about Spain's involvement in this mission: "I like to come to these training courses for Ukrainian fighters to emphasise, once again, Spain's total and absolute commitment to Ukraine in this terrible, cruel war, which is now entering its fourth year."
"We understand that this war has to end, but in the meantime, Spain will fulfil its commitments to the European Union and NATO by supporting Ukraine and helping to train its people."
This is the fifth rotation to move to the Infantry Academy in Toledo to provide this training which, within the framework of the EUMAM-UA operation, aims to improve the capabilities of Ukrainians to effectively defend their internationally recognised borders and protect their population.
The members of this European mission are part of the Ceuta General Command, the Health Group and the Logistics Brigade.
Throughout the weeks of the course, the Spanish troops instruct Ukrainians in combat and survival tactics, as well as health care. Living with them also creates strong personal bonds, as Lieutenant Colonel José Roberto, head of the Combat Training Unit, acknowledged: "As Spaniards, it is impossible not to create those links."
In his presentation to the minister, the head of the unit shared some cases of human stories with a special emotional charge and highlighted the involvement of the Ukrainians, who are grateful for the dedication of the Spanish military.
