July 29, 2025 - The City of St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation Department, along with the Kissimmee Valley Foresters, are conducting a prescribed fire at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve on Wednesday, July 30, beginning around 10 a.m. Partial trail closures are expected between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. This information may change depending on weather conditions.
The burn will be conducted in units 21, 21a, 23b, 30, and portions of the Nursery, assuming favorable weather conditions. They may also burn units 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 18 of the preserve if conditions allow.
These units make up 62 acres of the preserve. The map below shows the burn unit.
Prescribed burns are routinely done at the preserve for land management and environmental benefits that include reducing hazardous fuels, protecting communities from extreme fires, minimizing the spread of pest insects and disease, improving habitats, and promoting growth. Intervals between prescribed burns vary widely and are dependent upon the vegetation type, climate and typography.
