Detroit Health Department brings Public Health Week directly into Detroit neighborhoods

  • Marking Chief Public Health Officer and Health Director Ali Abazeed's first Public Health Week with a focus on prevention, proximity, and access
  • Residents can receive screenings, immunizations, and other vital services at no cost, with no appointment required
  • Events will take place at neighborhood recreation centers, Wayne County Community College, and partner locations across the city

The Detroit Health Department will host Public Health Week 2026 from April 7 through April 11 with a coordinated, citywide effort to deliver critical health services and resources directly into communities. Held as part of National Public Health Week, this year's theme, "Ready, Set, Action," reflects a focus on prevention, early detection, and meeting residents where they are.

"Public health only works if it's close to people's lives," said Chief Public Health Officer and Director Ali Abazeed. "That means showing up in neighborhoods, removing barriers, and making it easier for Detroiters to access care. Public Health Week is both a call to action and a recognition of the public health workforce, especially the staff of the Detroit Health Department, whose daily work makes a healthier city possible."

No appointment or identification is required to participate. Events are designed to be accessible and convenient, taking place in trusted community spaces across Detroit.

Throughout the week, residents can access a range of free services, including health screenings, immunizations, overdose prevention resources, lead testing, and vision and hearing screenings. The week will also feature family-friendly activities and opportunities to connect with healthcare providers and community partners.

Public Health Week reflects a broader approach to building a healthier Detroit - one that brings services into neighborhoods, while strengthening coordination across city departments and community partners. Recognizing that health is shaped not just by healthcare, but by the environments people live in, this work reflects a growing effort by this administration to embed health into decisions across the city.
