Dyersburg Man Sentenced to 31 Years in Federal Prison for Drug Trafficking - Again

Jackson, TN - A federal judge has sentenced Vinson Brent Taylor, 46, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, to a total term of 31 years in federal prison for drug trafficking offenses. D. Michael Dunavant, United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, announced the sentence today.

According to evidence presented in court, in August of 2024, an officer with the Dyersburg Police Department was on patrol duty when he witnessed two men fighting in front of a residence. Both men fled the scene upon the officer's arrival. While investigating the scene, the officer came across a rental vehicle that was left running and had its driver-side door wide open.

The vehicle contained a large quantity of crack cocaine and over 250 fentanyl pills, as well as marijuana, ecstasy, and an unknown substance later tested and identified to be methamphetamine. Near the center console of the vehicle were Taylor's cellphone and a car rental agreement in his name. A hat with distinctive embroidery was found near the vehicle; and a forensic analysis conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation determined that the hat contained Taylor's DNA.

Taylor's criminal history includes at least three other convictions for selling cocaine, three convictions for evading law enforcement, six convictions for possessing and trafficking marijuana, a conviction for retaliating against a law enforcement officer, two convictions for assaults, and over 46 prior arrests.

On May 5, 2026, a federal jury found Taylor guilty on two counts of trafficking crack cocaine and fentanyl. At a sentencing hearing on October 20, 2026, United States District Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson noted the serious nature of the crime as well as Taylor's extensive criminal history, and sentenced Taylor to 30 years' imprisonment.

Taylor previously served a 151-month sentence in federal prison for trafficking crack cocaine and was on federal supervised release at the time he committed this crime.

The government presented additional evidence that Taylor had engaged in other criminal conduct while on supervised release, including possessing over 800 grams of marijuana in April 2024 and evading police in October 2024, which resulted in Taylor being sentenced to an additional year of imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant said, "Taylor is a hard-headed recidivist drug dealer who was brazenly distributing deadly fentanyl into our rural communities while on supervised release for the same conduct. He clearly did not learn his lesson from his prior 12 ½-year prison sentence, so he will now be removed from West Tennessee until he is 77 years old."

"Our agency, as well as our law enforcement partners, will continue to vigorously pursue those who fuel this deadly epidemic by illegally distributing these deadly substances," said TBI Director David Rausch.

This case was investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Dyersburg Police Department, United States Secret Service, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Immanuel Chioco and Adam Davis prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
