Rhode Island Energy honored for emergency response after historic winter blizzard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 14, 2026) - Rhode Island Energy (RIE) was named a recipient of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Emergency Response Award. Presented annually to EEI member companies, the award recognizes heroic efforts by electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events.

RIE received the Emergency Recovery Award, which recognizes an EEI member company's efforts to safely and efficiently restore service to its customers following a major event. Rhode Island Energy was honored for its response to the historic Blizzard of 2026 which dumped up to 37 inches of snow across Rhode Island and brought winds gusts exceeding 70 mph, knocking out power to more than 70-thousand customers.

"Few storms in our history have tested our state and our employees like the Blizzard of 2026. When most people go home to stay safe, our employees go out - into the storm - to serve our customers and restore their power," said Greg Cornett, President of Rhode Island Energy. "They worked around the clock, alongside our contractors and state and municipal emergency partners, in historic conditions to safely restore power to 99 percent of our customers within 48 hours. I couldn't be prouder of their dedication and commitment to Rhode Island and the customers we serve."

Winners were selected by a panel of judges through a nomination process. The awards were presented during EEI's September Board of Directors and Chief Executives Meeting.

"When severe weather strikes, our member companies mobilize around the clock to restore power safely and as quickly as possible for the customers they serve," said Drew Maloney, President and CEO of EEI. "EEI is proud to recognize Rhode Island Energy with the Emergency Recovery Award for its outstanding response following the Blizzard of 2026. This honor reflects the skill and determination of RIE's workforce, who prepare year-round-practicing, planning, and investing in resilience-so they're ready to face the toughest conditions and get the lights back on for communities who depend on them."
