The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today announced a consent order with PT Elangperdana Tyre Industry for violations of the Uniform Tire Quality Grading standards. The Indonesian company, also known as EP Tyres, failed to label its tires with correct grades.
The Vehicle Safety Act requires manufacturers of passenger car tires to provide information to consumers on treadwear, traction performance and temperature resistance. Under the Uniform Tire Quality Grading standards, each tire must be able to achieve the level of performance represented by the grade labeled on the tire's sidewall.
"The Uniform Tire Quality Grading standards help consumers understand a tire's performance and to select the tire that's right for their needs. NHTSA takes this federal requirement seriously and uses its robust enforcement authority to ensure manufacturers are complying with the law," NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said.
Under the consent order, the company will pay a total civil penalty of $425,000, with $125,000 held in abeyance contingent on no new violations and full compliance with the terms of the consent order.
The term of this consent order is 18 months. By signing the consent order, PT Elangperdana Tyre Industry admits to the violations and affirms that they have been resolved. The consent order requires the company to review internal processes and develop a policy for its tire grading process. The company will update NHTSA once a quarter for the duration of the consent order on the progress of this review and submit a final policy to NHTSA before the end of the consent order.
