Rep. Tangie Herring Applauds House Passage of Property Tax Relief for Seniors in Macon-Bibb County

ATLANTA - State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) today announced that House Bill 1537 and House Bill 1538, which both aim to provide property tax relief to seniors in Macon-Bibb County, passed on the Local Calendar in the House today and are now headed to the Senate for consideration.

"Our seniors have spent decades building this community, and they deserve to retire with the financial security to stay in the homes they love," said Rep. Herring. "By moving these bills forward, we are one step closer to providing real, tangible relief to our neighbors who have given so much to Middle Georgia."

HB 1537 and HB 1538 would establish a tiered system of homestead exemptions for eligible residents, with HB 1537 applying to Bibb County School District ad valorem taxes and HB 1538 applying to Bibb County ad valorem taxes. Both bills would provide $17,000 of the assessed value for residents aged 65 to 74, $32,000 for those aged 75 to 84 and a full exemption of the assessed value for residents 85 and older.

"We are leading the charge to prevent the displacement of our senior citizens and ensuring Macon-Bibb remains an affordable place to live," added Rep. Herring. "I am proud to see this local priority move to the Senate and will keep fighting to ensure our seniors get the tax break they have earned. I remain fully committed to advocating for the 145th House District as these bills move through the next stage of the legislative process. I look forward to sharing more updates as we work to get this relief across the finish line for our community."
