Economic Development Office expands program

The City of Lakewood's Economic Development Office is expanding its Business Safety and Security Program citywide this year to help local businesses create safer environments for their employees, customers and the community.

Lakewood businesses can apply for a grant of $2,500-$5,000 for eligible safety improvements they would like to make to their properties. These grants were previously available to businesses in selected areas of the city, and now companies located throughout the city are eligible. No matching contribution is required from businesses, and grant awards will be made based on project readiness and the potential positive impact to business operations and public safety.

Grant applications will be accepted at LakewoodCO.gov/SafetyGrant through 5 p.m. March 31 or until funding is expended. Funding is limited, so early applications are strongly encouraged.

Examples of eligible improvements:

  • Upgrading exterior lighting.
  • Adding security cameras and alarm systems.
  • Enhancing doors and windows.
  • Increasing mirrors and signage.
  • Providing fences, locks and other security measures that help police respond more effectively.

To qualify, businesses must be located in a commercially zoned district, possess a valid business license and comply with all applicable zoning and permitting requirements. Applicants must also enroll in the Police Department's Business Watch program and complete required documentation as part of the grant application process. All approved projects must be completed by Dec. 31. Full eligibility guidelines are available LakewoodCO.gov/SafetyGrant.
