It's time to file 2025 taxes - don't forget about free tax preparation through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). The income limit for the service has increased, making free tax preparation available to anyone who makes less than $69,000 annually. The VITA program is run through Boise State's College of Business and Economics Department of Accountancy.
In-person appointments are currently available at the VITA program's new location at Boise State's The Junction and at the Orchard Park Library in Meridian. Virtual appointments will be available starting in March.
VITA's move to The Junction, the university's new "meeting place for entrepreneurship, research and economic development" at 2225 W. University Drive offers both convenience and opportunity.
"Moving to The Junction has made a meaningful difference for our VITA program, which offers free tax preparation services to low-income taxpayers," said Dana Cameron, accountancy lecturer. "With more days of availability and a more consistent schedule, we're able to better serve the community. The campus location is convenient for the university community members that use our services, and also makes it far more convenient for VITA students to participate around their class schedule without the added time and stress of commuting to another location."
VITA is staffed by IRS-certified volunteers, including accounting students, faculty and emeriti from the College of Business and Economics, as well as community members and partner organizations. The program provides in-person and virtual support for both federal and state tax returns. In 2025, VITA volunteers prepared over 1,045 tax returns and assisted over 1,200 Idahoans.
