McDonald Rivet Statement on Passing Legislation to Stand Up to China

WASHINGTON- Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement after supporting bipartisan legislation through the U.S. House of Representatives to combat the opioid crisis, shine a light on human rights violations, and support American manufacturing by standing up to China.

"The Chinese Communist Party is a dishonest actor on the global stage, whose policies consistently hurt American workers, push fentanyl in our streets, and undermine human rights. We need to be serious and tough in standing up to them," said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. "Today's bills to stop the flow of fentanyl into our country and prevent the import of goods made from forced labor are important steps in the right direction."

Congresswoman McDonald Rivet voted in favor of the following pieces of legislation:

  • The Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act of 2025expands the definition of foreign opioid traffickers to include Chinese entities that produce, manufacture, distribute, sell or knowingly finance or transport synthetic opioids as well as those who fail to prevent opioid trafficking. It would also expand the definition to include Chinese officials who aid and abet opioid trafficking.
  • The Uyghur Policy Act of 2025requires the federal government to create a strategy to raise global awareness of the persecution of Uyghurs in China and to pressure China to close all detention facilities and "political reeducation" camps that house Uyghurs and other ethnic minority groups. It will help prevent the importation of goods made with forced labor, which will also support American manufacturers who use fair labor practices.
