North Carolina Invests More Than $110 Million in NCCU to Expand Student Success, Workforce Development

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will receive more than $110.3 million in state funding through North Carolina's newly enacted budget, giving the university new opportunities to expand student success, strengthen academic programs, enhance research and prepare graduates for North Carolina's workforce.

The funding shows the state's continued confidence in NCCU and the university's momentum in recent years. NCCU has surpassed 9,000 students for the first time in its 116-year history, launched the nation's first artificial intelligence institute at an HBCU, achieved the highest NCLEX passage rate among historically Black college and university nursing programs in North Carolina, expanded academic offerings with a doctoral program in counseling and a bachelor's program in formulations and packaging science and earned a clean audit from the NC State Auditor.

As one of the fastest-growing institutions in the University of North Carolina System, NCCU will use this funding to serve more students, invest in faculty and staff, improve campus facilities and create more pathways for students to thrive.

"This investment is about opportunity, impact and the future of North Carolina Central University," said Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon. "We are grateful to the North Carolina General Assembly for their support and committed to being good stewards of these resources as we continue bringing our Vision 2030: Soaring to New Heights strategic plan to life."

By the Numbers

The state budget for NCCU includes:

  • $98.6 million in recurring base funding to support university operations.
  • $7.3 million in enrollment funding to support NCCU's continued growth.
  • $3.3 million in recurring program-specific funding through the UNC System.
  • $900,000 in recurring funding for the Cheatham-White Scholars Program.
  • $300,000 in North Carolina Collaboratory funding administered through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The budget also provides funding for faculty and staff compensation, athletics through sports wagering revenues, campus improvements - including more than $6 million for the Edmonds Classroom Building - and expanded health-related academic programs that will help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals and meet North Carolina's workforce needs.
