Geisinger College Day celebrated Sept. 28

SCRANTON, Pa. - At its fifth annual Geisinger College Day on Sept. 28, Geisinger College of Health Sciences celebrated its continued growth, having recently launched a new master's degree program and announcing plans to expand its School of Nursing with a Northeast Campus in Scranton. The medical school has graduated more than 1300 doctors.

"Part of honoring our past is acknowledging how important the community is to our future," said Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, president of Geisinger College of Health Sciences and chief academic officer at Geisinger. "When we evaluate a new degree program, our first question is always, What does our community need? Our School of Nursing is a perfect example. The local need for nurses is enormous. We are proud that we will be able to open the doors to careers in healthcare for more local people, while at the same time meeting our neighbors' needs."

In addition to the School of Nursing campus, the College's School of Graduate Education welcomed the second class in its master's degree program for genetic counseling. New residency programs, most notably an emergency medicine residency program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, are also being introduced.

"We'll also spotlight our research accomplishments," Dr. Byerley noted, "including more than 1,180 peer-reviewed publications, over 1,600 active research projects and a growing portfolio of clinical trials and collaborative partnerships. From advancing precision health through MyCode-Connect to expanding opportunities for clinical and translational research across Pennsylvania, we are building the infrastructure, expertise and partnerships needed to move discoveries more efficiently into patient care.
