SIIA Joins Amicus Brief Opposing Mississippi’s Unconstitutional Online Speech Law

The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) joined an amicus brief with several leading technology and internet industry associations urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to affirm a lower court's injunction blocking Mississippi's H.B. 1126. The law imposes sweeping, content-based restrictions on digital services, including mandatory age verification, parental consent, and content monitoring requirements.

The brief argues that the Act violates the First Amendment by compelling online services to censor lawful speech, creating costly compliance burdens that threaten innovation and competition, and introducing vague and inconsistent obligations across states. The amici urge the court to uphold the district court's finding that the law is likely unconstitutional and to protect the free exchange of ideas online.
