How was Dynegy selected?
Palmer Energy conducted a competitive bidding process on behalf of the participating communities. Six potential suppliers were invited to submit proposals, and three responded. After reviewing the proposed rates, contract terms and current electricity market conditions, the Miami Valley Technology and Communications Group (MVTCG) selected Dynegy for a three-year agreement beginning in January 2027. The agreement provides a fixed electricity supply rate through December 2029.
Why is the price increasing?
There are multiple reasons for the higher prices. The previous agreement was able to secure a competitive rate for a longer term; however, wholesale electricity prices are higher than they were at the time of the last contract. The primary reason for the price increase is dramatically higher generation capacity costs, which are a portion of the supply cost.
Over the last several years, Ohio has benefited from low prices for generation capacity. As you have likely heard, there is a push to build large data centers in Ohio and across the United States, creating an increase in expected power demand. Based on supply and demand balances, the generation resources currently available, and existing resources that can reliably reduce their load on the grid, are compensated at a higher dollar amount, which flows through to end-users. The higher capacity cost also acts as an economic driver for entities to build new generation resources and/or improve the efficiency of existing resources.
The previous aggregation rate was 9.049 cents per kilowatt-hour. The new rate is 11.53 cents per kilowatt-hour, reflecting higher costs in the electricity market.
Why lock in a rate that's higher than AES Ohio's current rate?
While the new aggregation rate will initially be slightly higher than AES Ohio's standard supply rate, the agreement is designed to provide long-term price stability. Recent electricity auctions indicate that AES Ohio's standard rate is likely to increase beginning in June 2027, with additional rate changes expected in 2028 and 2029.
By locking in a rate now, participants can avoid fluctuations in their electricity supply rate through December 2029. The program also allows customers to leave at any time without paying an early termination fee.
Are the rates fixed or variable?
The standard aggregation rate is fixed at 11.53 cents per kilowatt-hour from January 2027 through December 2029. An optional 100% renewable energy rate is available at 11.73 cents per kilowatt-hour. Please see the Terms and Conditions for additional details.
When will I see my new rate?
The new rate will take effect beginning with the January 2027 billing period, based on your utility's meter reading schedule. Customers should see the new rate reflected on their bills following the transition.
Who will bill me for electricity?
You will continue to receive one monthly bill from AES.
Can I still have my payment automatically deducted from my checking account as I do now?
Yes. How you pay your electric bill will not change.
Will I continue to receive budget billing on my monthly bill?
Duke Energy, Ohio Edison, Toledo Edison, and The Illuminating Company include supplier charges in your monthly budgeted amount and will continue to provide that service. Dynegy will NOT automatically budget the supplier charges on your electric utility bill in AES Ohio. If you are on, or enter into, a budget billing plan in AES Ohio or Ohio Power Company with at least 10 months of billing history, you are eligible to request budget billing for your electric generation service with Dynegy. If you do not meet Dynegy's minimum requirements, you won't be able to participate in a Dynegy budget billing plan, and your electric utility may not budget the generation portion of your bill. If you have additional questions about the program, please contact Dynegy directly at 1-888-682-2170 any day of the week from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. or email [email protected].
Can I participate if my account is net-metered?
Yes, accounts enrolled with the Utility in net-metering can participate in the program.
Who do I call to report a power outage or problems with my electric service?
You will contact AES to report a power outage or problems with your electric service, including billing questions.
What if I have already selected another supplier?
If you are already in a contract with a different supplier, you are able to terminate that contract and opt in to the aggregation program with Dynegy; however, carefully review the terms and conditions of that agreement before proceeding, as your ability to terminate early with that supplier may be restricted.
Is there an early termination fee for leaving the program outside of the 21-day opt-out period?
No, there is no early termination fee.
I previously opted out of the program. Why am I receiving this letter?
You are provided the opportunity to participate each time your community chooses a new supplier, price and term length.
Who do I contact if I have additional questions about this offer?
If you have additional questions about the program, please contact directly at 1-888-682-2170 any day of the week from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. or email [email protected]
