Water Resources' Youth Contests Are Underway

The City's Water Resources Department is accepting submissions for its annual Piedmont Model Water Tower Competition and Water Conservation Poster Contest, in collaboration with NC One Water, now through early April. Both programs are open to students who attend Guilford County public schools, private schools, and homeschool associations. Participation is free, and winning entries receive prizes.

Piedmont Model Water Tower Competition Information

Registration (Required) Deadline: Saturday, April 11

Competition Date: Saturday, May 2 (Attendance required at competition)

Time: Competition check-in is from 9-9:30 am.

Bring the following materials:

Location: Craft Community Recreation Center, 3911 Yanceyville St.

Participants: Students from the following Piedmont counties are eligible: Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.

Competitors from the 12-county Piedmont area may work individually or in teams of up to four students in grades 3 through 8 to construct a functional model water tower. (Elementary- and middle-school participants may not combine on one team.) Winners are determined by the tower's structural and cost efficiency, ability to hold water, aesthetics, and capacity for quick filling and draining.

Students will learn concepts related to water resource engineering, infrastructure, water treatment, and water conservation. Contest organizers hope some participants may develop an interest in the water profession.

Contestants must register in advance and should review the complete list of competition guidelines at https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/ModelWaterComp.

Water Conservation Poster Contest Information

The 2026 poster contest theme, "Guardians of the Drop," encourages students in grades K-8 to explore the vital role of water in our lives and the importance of water conservation. Posters will be judged in three divisions: grade levels K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Friday, April 10, and must adhere to the official guidelines and rules on the website. Review the guidelines and submit your poster via the online form at greensboro-nc.gov/Poster Contest.

Winners will be announced in early May and receive special recognition from the City's Water Resources Department, a prize, and represent Greensboro in a statewide contest sponsored by NC One Water in late spring.
