Statement from Premier Pillai on Hanukkah

Statement from Premier Pillai on Hanukkah

Published 24/12/2024

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

"Tomorrow at sunset, Jewish communities across the world will light the first candle of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

"As winter settles in and the Yukon's long nights stretch on, this festival of lights arrives as a beacon of light and joy, providing warmth and meaning during the darkest time of the year. Hanukkah brings together Jewish communities to celebrate their faith, perseverance and the triumph of light over darkness.

"Specifically, Hanukkah celebrates and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, following the military victory of the Maccabees over state-sponsored repression of the Jewish community in the 2nd century B.C.E. After the Jewish people reclaimed the temple, they found only enough oil to light the menorah for a single day. Instead, a miracle occurred and the oil burned for eight days.

"Hanukkah celebrates this miracle of light, and it serves as a reminder of the resilience of the Jewish people and their enduring strength of faith.

"As we gather with family, friends, and communities, may this season inspire us to embrace the values of kindness, gratitude and unity. I want to wish a warm, peaceful and meaningful Hanukkah filled with love, light and blessings to all those who celebrate.

"Hanukkah sameach!"
