Spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza to herds of cattle in the USA

It is of great concern that, in the USA, avian influenza A has been detected not just on poultry farms but also in the dairy sector - in raw milk, milking equipment, slurry and even in the air on farms - and there is a high risk that after crossing into cattle it will mutate and appear in humans.

• 1.What measures is the Commission taking to strengthen surveillance and biosecurity systems on European farms so as to prevent a similar scenario arising in the European Union?
• 2.Does the Commission intend to develop further guidance for Member States on monitoring in the dairy sector, including the systematic analysis of raw milk and of dairy farm environments?
