NAVY CALLS ON TECH EXPERTS AND INNOVATORS TO ADVISE MODERNIZATION INITIATIVES

12 June 2026

A new direct-commission pathway recruits senior engineers, software architects, and technical leaders to solve critical maritime technology challenges.

WASHINGTON - The Department of the Navy is launching a targeted national talent search to recruit elite commercial technology professionals into the Navy Reserve's Navy Innovation Unit (NIU). This strategic initiative will bridge the gap between the speed of commercial technology and the Fleet's operational needs. The program is designed specifically for technical leaders, architects, and builders. The Navy is seeking professionals who have served as early-stage startup employees or have a proven track record of delivering high-impact products at scale.

Selected experts will receive a direct commission as an officer in the Navy Reserve, allowing them to continue their civilian career while also dedicating their expertise to high-priority national security challenges. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in fast-paced, agile, and geographically distributed team environments. They will be evaluated on their practical contributions to significant open-source projects and their experience conducting technical due diligence, patent applications, or published academic research.

This highly skilled unit will also include Navy Reserve Sailors who will rapidly field, scale, and secure modern technologies for the global fleet. Prospect profiles will range from advanced expertise in quantum information, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and autonomous and unmanned systems. The search also prioritizes experts in software engineering, DevOps, cloud architecture, cybersecurity, offensive or defensive cyber operations, advanced communications and network engineering.

Interested industry professionals who meet the technical and leadership criteria are encouraged to contact CDR Caitlin Tye directly at [email protected].
