BERTRAND DRIVE: BREAKING GROUND ON A STRONGER LAFAYETTE
Project advances safer travel, modern infrastructure, and new opportunities for residents and businesses along the corridor.
Lafayette, LA - Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) officially marked a major milestone today with the groundbreaking of the Bertrand Drive Revitalization Project-moving from vision to construction on one of Lafayette's most transformative infrastructure investments.
The project is the result of months of public engagement, with community meetings beginning in late 2024. Input from residents, business owners, and stakeholders directly shaped the design and priorities of the corridor, ensuring the final plan reflects the needs of those who live, work, and invest along Bertrand Drive. Today's groundbreaking brought together partners and community members from across Lafayette, reflecting the shared commitment behind this effort.
"This project is about more than just beautification-sure, we will make it beautiful when it's completed, but it's really about activating this corridor," said Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. "We're creating a space where people can safely walk, bike, and stroll with their children, where we can intentionally connect some of our most activated places, and where businesses can grow and thrive on Bertrand Drive."
From Vision to Reality
The Bertrand Drive corridor serves as a key link between some of Lafayette's major destinations, including Cajun Field and Moncus Park, while also running through Holden Heights, one of Lafayette's oldest neighborhoods. This investment represents a significant step in revitalizing the area's historic grid and positioning it for future growth.
Planned improvements include:
Together, these improvements will create a more connected, accessible corridor that encourages walking, biking, and active use, while improving overall safety and mobility.
Investing in Infrastructure and Economic Growth
A key component underway is the undergrounding of communications infrastructure-a $1.9 million investment that will improve reliability, reduce outages, and enhance the visual character of the corridor. This portion of the project is being constructed by DPG Construction and is expected to be completed by Fall 2026.
The broader corridor design is led by Mader Engineering and Stantec, in collaboration with LCG and key community partners including Moncus Park, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Bike Lafayette.
Beyond infrastructure, the project is designed to drive economic development, supporting existing businesses while creating new opportunities for growth along the corridor. Improved access, visibility, and connectivity will help businesses thrive while attracting future investment to the area. This effort also serves as a model for what's possible across Lafayette, including continued momentum along the Johnston Street corridor and other key investments parishwide.
Project Oversight and Public Engagement
The Bertrand Drive Revitalization Project is managed by LCG's Capital Improvements team, reinforcing the Boulet administration's commitment to delivering projects efficiently and transparently.
