The actions we’re taking on pricing in LA

With tens of thousands of people currently displaced in the Los Angeles area and the prospect of that figure continuing to increase, the last thing anyone should encounter is pricing for a hotel room or a home that seeks to take advantage of a desperate situation.

Today, we're taking action with our hosts with respect to pricing in light of the exceptional circumstances in Los Angeles:

  • We are working to help hosts in Los Angeles County and Ventura County comply with the California Attorney General's consumer alert. Those hosts who attempt to raise prices by more than 10% from their pre-emergency pricing structure will instead receive an error message.
  • We are sending communications to Airbnb hosts in Los Angeles County and Ventura County to remind them of the consumer alert.

We are urging all other hospitality companies in Los Angeles - including the hotel industry - to take similar action against exploitative pricing in service of victims displaced by the fires.

An update on Airbnb.org's work in LA

When the wildfires broke out in LA, Airbnb.org, a nonprofit organization founded by Airbnb, partnered with 211 LA to offer emergency housing to individuals and families who lost their homes or were forced to evacuate, and first responders. Stays are completely free for guests - Airbnb waives all of its fees for these stays, and Airbnb.org covers the cost of stays.

At the end of last week, Airbnb.org committed to providing free emergency housing for at least 25,000 people impacted by the wildfires. By Tuesday, Airbnb.org reached this initial goal, offering free, temporary housing to more than 25,000 people and 6,000 pets. Airbnb.org is now focusing on supporting extended stays and has committed to funding another 50,000 nights to support the thousands of people in Los Angeles who continue to need housing support.
