Governor Gianforte Presents Spirit of Montana Award to Flathead County Educator

KALISPELL, Mont. - Governor Greg Gianforte today recognized Saint Matthew's Catholic School's Sister Judy Lund in Kalispell with his Spirit of Montana award for her 71 years as an educator.

"Sister Judy's lifelong commitment to serving others has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless families in the Flathead community," Gov. Gianforte said. "Service, humility, and compassion are values that define Montana at its best, and Sister Judy has demonstrated each of them through her work at Saint Matthew's Catholic School."

During a ceremony held at Saint Matthew's Catholic School, Gov. Gianforte joined more than 100 students, community members, and staff to present Sister Judy with a letter, certificate, and a Montana State Flag flown over the state capitol in her honor. Delivering remarks, the governor shared the story behind her nomination and recognized her decades of commitment to education and faith-based service.

For more than three decades, Sister Judy has served as an educator at Saint Matthew's Catholic School, teaching science, literature, and scripture while also encouraging students to give back to their community. Each year, she inspires her students to support community organizations like Sparrow's Nest of Northwest Montana, which provides housing and resources for homeless high school students.

Last year, Sister Judy announced her planned retirement at the end of this school year. After receiving the award, Sister Judy shared a message with students.

"Listen to what the Lord wants you to do and follow your heart. Make good choices and follow those choices, and then with the Lord, make the choice that's best for the moment," Sister Judy said. "We all know I've had a lot of moments to make choices!"

She continued, "I know I will carry closest to my heart the boys and girls I've met in Kalispell, Montana. I will carry you with me always. Every day when I pray, you will be there, that you make wonderful and good choices."

The governor's Spirit of Montana award recognizes Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Montanans may nominate members of their community for the award here .
