CHICAGO (September 29, 2025) - Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing asbestos-containing materials from the Michner Plating-Mechanic Street Superfund site located at 520 N. Mechanic St. in Jackson, Michigan. EPA estimates this work will be complete by November.

Michner Plating operated as a metal-plating facility from around 1936 through 2007. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy referred the site to EPA because of the extensive contamination left at the facility. After placing it on the Superfund National Priorities List in 2022, a list of the most contaminated sites in the nation, EPA began to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater at the site.

In January, EPA discovered fallen roof tiles that contained asbestos. To quickly address this hazardous waste, crews will begin to remove asbestos-containing materials for proper disposal. During cleanup, work areas will be kept wet to prevent dust from leaving the site. Air monitoring will also take place around site activities. Residents can expect increased vehicle traffic and noise during work hours. Workers may be wearing respirators and other personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous dust.

More information about the site is available at EPA's Michner Plating Superfund website.
