Moody's Ratings (Moody's) has upgraded Macomb County's credit rating to Aaa, its highest rating. Citing very strong financial management practices and a robust economic base, Moody's upgraded the County's rating celebrating its financial outlook.
"The County's finances have always been a top priority for our entire team. This is great news for the County's daily operations and investments, but even better news for the residents and businesses that make Macomb their home," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "Achieving the top rating places Macomb County in an elite group of local governments nationwide recognized for their exceptional financial strength. I want to thank the Board of Commissioners and the Macomb County Treasurer for the continued partnership and support."
The Aaa ratings increase reflects the county's dynamic economic position, which continues to benefit from stable population growth and labor force participation. Moody's noted Macomb County's economy provides diverse employment opportunities in aerospace, defense and robotics. Moody's also highlighted the County's importance to the automotive industry with General Motors, Stellantis and Ford, among its largest employers.
"Receiving this ratings upgrade is a powerful validation of our continued modernization of the County's financial practices," said Macomb County Finance Director John Scanlon. "This recognition speaks to the exceptional work of our finance team and the commitment across county departments to responsible financial management."
In its ratings statement, Moody's detailed the county's impressive financial position including: a balanced 2026 fiscal year budget; available fund balance; prudent management policies and practices; multi-year budgeting; and long-term liabilities covered by growing cash reserves.
