(Sioux City, Iowa - November 5, 2025) Briar Cliff University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Brian Peterson as the next Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, effective January 5, 2026. Dr. Peterson joins Briar Cliff from LaGrange College, where he has most recently served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Peterson brings more than three decades of experience in higher education, beginning his academic career in 1996 as an economics instructor, with previous positions held at LaGrange College, Central College, and Manchester University. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from Indiana University - Bloomington, and a B.S. in Business Administration (Economics) from the University of Dayton.

Throughout his career, Dr. Peterson has served as a dedicated educator, mentor, and leader, guided by a deep belief that higher education extends beyond the classroom.

"Higher education is a collaborative opportunity that challenges its members to grow in self-awareness and in their relationship to others and to God," Dr. Peterson said. "As an educator, I've sought to help students understand that education is a social good, meant to serve everyone."

At LaGrange College, Dr. Peterson focused on student retention, academic innovation, and holistic success, ensuring that every student has the support and pathways needed to achieve their goals. He is known for his collaborative, transparent leadership style and his commitment to fostering relationships that strengthen both academic and student life.

In addition to his administrative leadership, Dr. Peterson remains deeply engaged in the academic community. He currently serves on the editorial board of the American Conference of Academic Deans (ACAD) Newsletter, a Consulting Editor of the Journal of College Teaching, and a Delegate of the National Economic Education Delegation. He has also served as an off-site evaluator and Lead QEP Evaluator for regional accreditor SACSCOC.

Over the past three years, Dr. Peterson has played a key role in developing eleven new academic programs across undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, including a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, an M.S. in Computer Science, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, all designed to meet regional workforce needs and enhance institutional sustainability.

"Institutions like Briar Cliff must continue to develop mission-driven, data-informed programs that prepare students to succeed in a diverse society and rapidly changing workforce. I look forward to fostering that work alongside faculty, staff, and students," Dr. Peterson said.

In his new role, Dr. Peterson will collaborate with the University's leadership team to guide academic strategy, enhance student development, and continue strengthening Briar Cliff's reputation for providing a nurturing and values-driven learning environment.

"Dr. Peterson's depth of experience and alignment with Briar Cliff's Franciscan values make him an ideal leader for this pivotal time in the University's growth," said Dr. Matthew Draud, President of Briar Cliff University. "His commitment to collaboration, innovation, and student success will help us continue to deliver on our mission to prepare ethical world changers."

Dr. Peterson said he is eager to join the Briar Cliff community.

"It is with both eagerness and humility that I step into this role," he said. "Briar Cliff's mission and values deeply resonate with my own, and I look forward to working with the campus community to continue building a vibrant, inclusive, and faith-centered environment where students can flourish."
