City of Iowa City warns residents of scam impersonating City employees

The City of Iowa City is alerting residents to recent scam activity involving individuals posing as City employees in an attempt to collect fraudulent payments for services or applications.

In a recent incident, a resident received an email containing what appeared to be a legitimate invoice displaying the City's logo. The message included vague payment language such as "ACH transfer instructions provided upon request" and directed the recipient to reply to the email for additional details. The message concluded with a request for prompt payment, a common tactic used in scams.

The City emphasizes that it will never ask for bank account information, login credentials, or Social Security numbers, or demand wire transfers or other untraceable forms of payment.

Residents who receive suspicious communications should not respond or provide any personal or financial information. Instead, they are encouraged to contact City Hall directly at 319-356-5000 or visit in person at 410 E. Washington Street to verify the request.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspected fraudulent activity to the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-6800.
