Portland, Oregon - Council President Jamie Dunphy's "Save the Arts" amendment, Dunphy 2, has formally passed City Council tonight. This budget amendment protects critical music programming and arts funding across Portland.

"Save the Arts" preserves summer programming at the Community Music Center and partner sites like Midland and Kenton Libraries. This means 25 music teachers will keep their current wages, and families will have sustained access to music lessons, regardless of income.

Additionally, Dunphy 2 fills a reduction to the Arts & Culture Small Grants Program that would have resulted in approximately 45-55 fewer performances, exhibits, and works of art in the community.

"When budgets get tight, arts programs are often the first things put on the chopping block. I don't think that's the right approach for Portland, where much of our economy depends on artists and live entertainment," Council President Jamie Dunphy said.

"Music and art are not extras reserved for people with money and free time. They are the soul of our city, and vital tools for economic development, jobs, and public safety. They create community, support local artists, give young people creative outlets, and help neighborhoods stay vibrant and connected."

Community members can continue music classes and lessons without any increased fees thanks to Dunphy 2. This amendment preserves current service levels for approximately 270 group classes and 100 private lessons for youth students, many of whom are historically marginalized.

"Save the Arts" ensures our creative economy remains successful by bringing more art to the streets, more economic activity, and more people visiting downtown to support the arts.
