PHNOM PENH (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic is deeply saddened by the death of 14 workers and injuries to close to 80 others in two tragic road accidents that took place in Kampong Chhnang province and Svay Rieng province, Cambodia, on 23 May 2026.

The ILO extends its deepest sympathy to the families and dependents of those killed and injured. This loss of life is another reminder of the risks that thousands of workers face in Cambodia every day, simply making their journey to and from work.

The ILO commends the prompt action taken by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, in particular through the National Social Security Fund in providing assistance to the affected workers and their families.

The Royal Government of Cambodia and national stakeholders have recognized road safety as a major public health concern, including for commuting workers. It remains a complex challenge that requires systemic solutions, ranging from regulatory enforcement to improving the safety behaviour and practice of transport providers and commuters.

The ILO values the ongoing efforts made by the Royal Government of Cambodia in promoting the safety and health of workers, including during their daily commutes. Through its Better Factories Cambodia (BFC) programme and the Safety and Health for All Programme, the ILO has consistently worked to promote a safe and healthy working environment, including road safety for commuting workers and stands ready to continue supporting tripartite partners and industry stakeholders to achieve sustainable, long-term road safety solutions.
