As memory technologies advance and reflow processes in PCB manufacturing grow more complex, manufacturers face critical questions about maintaining data integrity and performance in pre-programmed devices. Shrinking process geometries and rising reflow temperatures make devices increasingly susceptible to performance degradation, especially with the shift from MLC (Multi-Level Cell) to TLC (Triple-Level Cell) memory devices.
At Data I/O, we've long established that pre-programming is safe for MLC devices. But with the adoption of 3D TLC UFS (Universal Flash Storage), how do these devices handle the thermal stresses of reflow? To answer these questions, we partnered with a leading UFS memory vendor to study the impact of reflow processes on pre-programmed devices.
The experiment focused on 3D TLC UFS devices from multiple semiconductor vendors and evaluated the thermal impact of reflow on device performance and reliability. Here's what we learned:
Reflow slows down read performance but does not cause reliability failures.
Multiple reflows (up to 3) are possible without data loss.
Refreshing the device after reflow completely restores read performance.
These findings confirm that pre-programming TLC devices is safe and that manufacturers can maintain high-quality performance by following simple post-reflow best practices.
Based on our findings, here are the recommended best practices for ensuring optimal performance through reflow processes:
Perform a Post-Reflow Refresh:
After reflow, refresh the device to fully restore read performance. This step is critical for maintaining data integrity and achieving maximum device efficiency.
Limit the Number of Reflows:
Limit reflow cycles to three or fewer to avoid unnecessary thermal stress on the device.
Collaborate with Trusted Vendors:
Work with semiconductor vendors and programming solution providers like Data I/O to adopt guidelines specifically designed for advanced memory technologies
