SARAJEVO, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was interviewed by CNN's Christiane Amanpour this week for a conversation that touched on the recent Bosnia and Herzegovina elections, Russia's war against Ukraine and Putin being invited to the upcoming G20 Leader's Summit in the United States.
Key quotes from Senator Shaheen on foreign policy topics during the interview are included below.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
"The fact is Congress passed legislation last year that required mandatory sanctions on Mr. [Milorad] Dodik for his rhetoric that pushes secession of the Republic of Srpska, a province of Bosnia-Herzegovina, from the country. The fact that he is praising Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in the same breath is not in America's interests."
"The United States' position is still that Bosnia and Herzegovina should maintain its territorial integrity, its ethnic makeup, continue to support democracy here and that is the policy certainly of the United States Congress. It's bipartisan, and it's been the policy of the White House."
"It's in America's interests to have Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to stay together; it is not in America's interests to disrupt the Western Balkans region, to continue [Putin's] war in Ukraine. America is not going to be the beneficiary. We will benefit if Vladimir Putin is defeated."
Russia and Ukraine
"Congress understands that to withdraw troops now, at a time where Vladimir Putin is flexing his muscles across Europe, is the wrong message to be sending."
"I have four grandsons. I don't want my grandsons to have to go fight because Donald Trump bowed down to a dictator who is interested in destroying NATO and destroying Europe."
"Donald Trump needs to wake up. He needs to understand that courting favor with Vladimir Putin is not good for America. He needs to disinvite him to the G20, and he needs to do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine is able to win this war."
