Human Rights Commission Accepting Nominations for 2026 Youth Human Rights Awards

The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Youth Human Rights Awards, an annual celebration honoring young people who are making meaningful contributions to human rights-locally, nationally, or around the world.

These awards shine a spotlight on youth who demonstrate exceptional creativity, leadership, and initiative in advancing human rights. The Commission seeks to recognize efforts that go beyond typical classroom expectations or pre-organized activities, highlighting young individuals who take extra steps to uplift others and address human rights challenges in their communities.

Award Criteria

Nominations should reflect youth-led efforts that extend beyond standard schoolwork or planned group activities. Projects connected to class assignments or organized events are welcome if the nominee's contributions clearly exceed what was originally required.

To nominate a youth, please visit the application on the City's website here.
